RETAIL SHOP DESIGN IDEAS

Retail shop Design:  People love to peep, look through, do window-shopping & buy.  So, keeping that order in mind, a retail shop can be divided into two main parts- the exterior , which provides an identification  to the store-front, show-windows & displays & then there’s the interior- where the commitment promised at the store-front  is thoroughly met & taken care of.

Principles of retail shop  design:  To design a successful retail shop, one must understand the merchandising psychology of first arousing interest for the merchandise & then quenching that interest.

+Attracting customers-  The design of store-fronts, display windows & new or re-modeled quarters are prioritized by the designer, in order to encompass the merchant’s efforts, so that the customers are intrigued to come inside.

+Inducing entrance- Door locations & show-windows need to be thoughtfully placed & designed, keeping in mind the flow  of traffic or pedestrian, store floors & the shop’s lay-out.

+Organizing store spaces-  Departmentalization is a vital way of handling, controlling the sale of merchandise more efficiently. Organizing the merchandise through different design approaches makes the store more functional.

+Interior displays-  The displays of retail shop vary accordingly. Types ranging from displays of staple goods to displays of accessories. The arrangements need to be done in relation to merchandise, departmentalization of goods & routes of customers’ approach to the store.

+Conveniences-  Conveniences are the extras that a retail shop needs. For example, in a florist shop, a card-writing desk is provided to make it more comfortable for the customers. These include- telephone booths, lavatories, drinking-fountains, sitting arrangements at counters, vanity tables, triplicate mirrors, etc.

Some important  tips for retail shop design-

+ the placement of cash register counter requires a lot of study. The type of merchandise will tell us whether these services  should be concealed  or revealed out in the open or whether it would be placed near or far from the door-ways.

+ An allocated space for waste baskets must be provided throughout the various departments of the retail store, but it should be partially hidden. It could be placed under the counter or a small space could be designed for the disposal area like a big, hollow wooden cube could be placed at a corner.

+ If it is a really large retail store, like for example, in a 5,000 sq.ft area, the management or staff areas such as lunch area for the sales-person could be further isolated by Venetian blinds or semi-obscure glass.

+  Ample amount of lighting must be provided  in the display areas. It would depend on the type of merchandise whether to use lighting on the shelves or ceilings or both.

+ Steps, inside the store, used for display should be raised higher, no less than 10-12 inches & well-lighted.

+ Scale is an important factor . The relation between the viewing distance of the merchandise & the size of the merchandise plays a major role in how popular the merchandise will become to the customers. Vistas & display areas, opposite the door-ways is a bolder choice of displaying the merchandise.
